Help buying tickets

Our guide to help you get the best deals!

Follow our 13 handy hints to get best value for money:

  1. Book early
Advance purchase, cheap train tickets are available up to three months prior to travel. Register online with ‘My Journeys’ for up-to-date information on ticket release dates.
  2. Be flexible
Advance purchase fares, which are limited in number, sell quickly on our most popular services. Try alternative times and dates, where possible, to find the cheapest train ticket for your journey.
  3. Don’t leave it to the last minute
Advance fares, the very cheapest train tickets, are only available subject to availability. Whilst you can buy them up to 1800 on the day before travel, the cheapest fares tend to sell out sooner, so it pays to book as far in advance as you can.
  4. Travel off-peak
If you are unable to book in advance, the cheapest train tickets will be available for travel during our Off Peak and Super Off Peak periods. We’ve also introduced off-peak discounts for parking at our stations, available from 1000 Mondays to Fridays and all day Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
  5. Buy online for exclusive discounts
Exclusive internet-booking discounts are available on our Advance fares online and you’ll save £1 for every single Advance fare. That means you’ll save £2 if you book a second single Advance fare for your return journey. Buy online for the best fare for the journey you wish to make.
  6. Travel with friends
Groupsave tickets – offering the opportunity for three or four people to travel at the price for two adults – are available on many journeys in the East Midlands region. Additional children can travel for a flat fare of £1. Call 08457 125 678 from 0800 to 2000 daily for more information.
  7. Use a railcard
If you’re under 26, in full-time education, over 60, travelling with children or you have a disability that makes movement difficult, you could be entitled to a railcard discount. Buy online at railcard.co.uk.
  8. Frequent travellers should consider Season Tickets
Frequent travellers can save a fortune over the year by buying a Season Ticket – so don’t miss out. For example, a weekly season from Mansfield to Nottingham costs £22 – saving £5.50 on the cost of five daily tickets. We offer even greater discounts for monthly, quarterly and annual season tickets.
  9. Buy all-inclusive tickets
There are several kinds of all-inclusive tickets. Plusbus adds unlimited bus travel to your train ticket, and Travelcards are valid on buses, tubes, trains and the DLR in London’s travel zones.
  10. Cheap train tickets for group travel
We can offer generous discounts for groups of 10 or more people travelling together – and Groupsave tickets are also available for groups of three or four. Call 08457 125 678 from 0800 to 2000 daily for more information.
  11. Take advantage of our cut-price off-peak parking prices
We’ve introduced off-peak discounts for parking at our stations, available from 1000 Mondays to Fridays and all day Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays.
